We are proud to share that Mitch, one of our Year 12 students, was a featured speaker at the 2024 Macquarie University [EX]plore Science Extension Conference. Mitch presented his research on isolating the spectral signature of carbon monoxide isotopologues from atmospheric noise, a proof-of-concept technique that has the exciting potential for detecting organic molecules associated with life on distant worlds.
Mitch’s work represents the authentic scientific research our students undertake in Science Extension. Mentored by our teachers with backgrounds in academic research, students collaborate with university teams to make original contributions to scientific knowledge. This self-directed journey develops their analytical and research skills while showcasing their ability to tackle complex challenges, setting them apart as exceptional candidates for university admissions and scholarships and as emerging leaders in the scientific community.
Mitch’s hard work and talent were recently recognised when he was awarded the Bright Horizons scholarship and one of only eight early entry scholarships to his dream degree: the Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) at the Australian National University, with an ANU selection rank of 99.95. The PhB is a research-focused undergraduate degree designed as a springboard into PhD studies at leading universities around the world. Of course, he accepted the offer – congratulations Mitch!
